Tremella (Tremella fuciformis), also called "Silver Ear" or "White Jerry Leaf", is a very popular mushroom not only used for Chinese cuisine but also used as a cough syrup for treating chronic tracheitis and a number of other cough-related conditions such as asthma, dry cough and heat in the lungs in traditional Chinese medicine. It is said that Yang Guifei (719-756, Imperial Concubine in Tang Dynasty), who was considered to be the most beautiful woman in Chinese history, was enthusiastic about the mushroom for her facial and body maintenance. Tremella contains more than 70% dietary fibers such as acidic polysaccharides, and is very rich in vitamin D. Modern research indicates its usefulness as an anti-tomor agent, in, lowering blood glucose, loering cholesterol, and protecting against radiation.
